Deltek Ajera connects project management and project accounting for architecture and engineering firms. Its current product page emphasizes staffing, dashboards, invoicing and financial visibility. Those capabilities are valuable, but a small practice still needs to decide who will keep the underlying project and financial data current.
The reason small firms go looking for alternatives is almost never that those capabilities are bad. It is that the firm cannot feed them.
What the depth actually costs
Project accounting is only as good as the data going into it. Overhead allocation needs an overhead rate somebody maintains. Work in progress needs cost data kept current. Utilization reporting needs timesheets filled in properly every week by everyone.
In a firm of eight, that maintenance usually lands on a director who also has projects to run. It gets done in month one and drifts by month four.
The failure mode is not that the software is wrong. It is that a heavy system with stale data is worse than a light system with current data, because people still make decisions from it.
Sorting the alternatives
The candidates differ in where financial work happens. Verify exact reports and integrations with each vendor, rather than assuming every product uses the same definition of project accounting.
| Option | Product focus | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Deltek Ajera | Project management with project accounting | Required reports, setup work and ongoing administration |
| BQE CORE | A&E projects, billing, resource planning and accounting | Modules in your quote and the month-end workflow |
| Monograph | Phase-based A&E work with project accounting and invoicing | The QuickBooks handoff and your exact WIP or overhead needs |
| Rizqo | Proposal-to-invoice workflow for a project-based practice | Whether its lighter revenue and time reporting is enough |
These products can all appear on the same shortlist, but they do not put the same amount of accounting work inside the practice-management tool.
Choosing by honest answer
Ask what happens to your last month's numbers if nobody touches the system for three weeks.
If the answer is that they stay roughly right, you can support an accounting-first system, and Deltek's depth is worth it. If the answer is that they quietly go wrong, you want fewer inputs, not more features.
That is a smaller claim than Deltek makes. For a practice without a finance owner, it is usually the more useful one. See Rizqo vs BQE CORE for a sourced comparison, BQE CORE alternatives for the wider options, and about Rizqo for everything it does not do.
